HSE University holds the status of a National Research University, a prestigious title given to a limited number of universities in Russia. As such, it has a strong commitment to training students to conduct academic research starting from the first year of bachelor’s studies. The university rewards academic research and creates an environment where students can participate in research competitions and work in research centres.

Tobias Vilhena de Moraes is a historian working at Museu Lasar Segall inSão Paulo, Brazil, and a faculty member of the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences at the University of Campinas. He is now working on a master’s degree at HSE University-St Petersburg.

The HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences has hosted a webinar for prospective international students interested in the master's programme in Economics and Economic Policy. Every year, HSE University welcomes more than a thousand students from all over the world. In 2024, Junseo Lee, a student from South Korea, came to HSE University-St Petersburg as a master’s student of the programme ‘Comparative Politics of Eurasia’. Pavel Voloshchuk has been developing and researching educational products for 14 years. Since August 2024, he has led two master's programmes at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science: ‘Research and Entrepreneurship in Artificial Intelligence’ and ‘Master of Data Science.’ In this interview, he talks about his career path, time management, and the specifics of academic supervision. 

Yan Minghao, from China, is in his second year of master’s study at ICEF HSE and has a passion for mathematics and Russian culture. In this interview, he shares the experience of being an ICEF student, contributing to international research venues, and travelling around Russia.

In January 2025, HSE University entered into a cooperation agreement with the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) to implement a double master’s that joins ICEF’s Financial Economics programme with SWUFE’s Master's in Finance. Combining the best of China and Russia’s academic frameworks, this new degree offers a unique study-abroad experience. In this collaboration, HSE ICEF is partnering with the Research Institute of Economics and Management (RIEM), which was established at SWUFE in 2006 to facilitate top-level, international research and training in economics and finance.

On March 2, an HSE Open Day for prospective undergraduates and specialist students will take place — one of the largest and most significant events for applicants, their parents, and the entire university. Visitors will have the opportunity to speak with students and representatives of educational programmes, plan their admission process, and immerse themselves in the HSE University atmosphere for a day. The event will be held in Russian.
