
HSE FCS Researchers Showcase AI and Bioinformatics Breakthroughs at ICLR 2026
Researchers from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, along with students from the AI360: Artificial Intelligence Engineering track of the Applied Mathematics and Information Science bachelor’s programme, took part in ICLR, one of the world’s most prestigious international conferences on machine learning and representation learning. This year’s event was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Student Develops Innovative Method for Detecting Oil Using PCR Tests
Fedor Shirshikov, a student of the Master's in Corporate Research, Development and Innovation Management at HSE University, has proposed an innovative technology for identifying oil and gas fields by detecting indicator microbes using PCR tests. The new method could help reduce the number of costly dry drilling operations. With this project, the student made it to the finals of the GreenTech Sustainable Development technology accelerator organised by the Skolkovo Foundation. In this interview, he explains why a biologist decided to study innovation management and how the oil industry inspired his startup idea.

HSE Students Among Winners of Yandex High-Tech Startup Accelerator
Yandex has announced the results of its Yandex AI Startup Lab accelerator, whose final round featured 12 IT projects. Over the course of three months, their creators—students and young entrepreneurs—worked alongside the company’s experts to develop their products. Four startups in digital marketing, medicine, and robotics were named the best, with their teams receiving cash prizes and cloud resource grants. Among them was Gradius, a startup founded by students from HSE University.

‘When Students Are Entrusted with Such Important Tasks, It Is Both Thrilling and Daunting’
Students of the International Relations programme at the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs—Daniil Moskalev (third year) and Elizaveta Evseeva (fourth year)—completed a six-month internship with the African Energy Chamber in South Africa as part of the Africa track. HSE Students Win Gold Medals at International Mathematics Olympiad in Turkmenistan
The VI Open Mathematical Olympiad for University Students (OMOUS-2026) was held in Ashgabat, bringing together teams from Russia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and the UAE. Around 600 students took part in the competition.

‘From Buryatia to the Caucasus in One Evening’: HSE University–St Petersburg Students Hold Fair of Nationalities of Russia
Where does the Mistress of the Copper Mountain live? How can the national cuisine of Tatarstan surprise you? What does the Stone Town near Perm look like? HSE University–St Petersburg hosted a fair which brought together representatives of various nationalities of Russia. Komi-Permyaks and Urals, Pomors, Karachais and Balkarians, Buryats and Tatars shared unique features of their cultures, presented their national dishes, and took international students on an interactive journey around Russian regions.

Terra Hominis 2026 Ignites Dialogue between Renowned and Prospective Researchers
The HSE Faculty of Humanities has held the fourth Terra Hominis conference, a scientific event for students, doctoral students, and prospective researchers. This year, more than 700 applications were received (1.5 times more than last year) and more than 400 participants and 200 attendees from different regions of Russia and foreign countries took part. The conference partners were the Main Information and Computer Centre of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre.

HSE MIEM and MTS Launch Workshop on Innovative Solutions in Communication Networks
The HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM) and MTS are launching a joint workshop in which students will work at the intersection of communications network engineering, data analysis, and digital technologies. The project is designed as a practice-oriented learning format, enabling students to tackle real industry challenges alongside company engineers and MIEM specialists. Registration to participate in the workshop is open until April 15, 2026.

HSE University and Yandex Cloud Hold Career School on AI Solutions for Social Tasks
HSE University has hosted a project-based career school organised by the Yandex Cloud Centre for Technologies and Society and the HSE Career Development Centre. The programme was intended for second-to-fourth-year bachelor’s students and first-to-second-year master's students of programmes related to social, technical, and business subjects. The school was aimed at students interested in solving social problems using AI technologies.
