The XI Russian-Chinese Summer School on International Relations Kicks Off at HSE University
On July 1, 2024, the opening ceremony of the XI International Russian-Chinese Summer School on International Relations, titled ‘Partnership and Cooperation in the New World Order,’ took place. The event was organised by the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs in collaboration with HSE Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies (CCEIS). Graduate and postgraduate students from various countries have come to Moscow to study international relations and collectively envision a new world order.
This year, the summer school brought together 35 graduate and postgraduate students from leading universities in Russia, China, and Malaysia. The participant base has significantly expanded to include students from nine Chinese and Malaysian universities, such as Fudan University, Tsinghua University, Peking University, and the University of Malaya. New partners joined long-term collaborator, East China Normal University, including Dalian University of Foreign Languages, Nanjing University, Xiangtan University, and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Participants also include students from Singapore, Brazil, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, and Slovakia. Russian participants represent educational institutions such as Saint Petersburg State University, Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University, the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, and the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. The summer school will run until July 7.
Timofey Bordachev, Academic Supervisor of the HSE Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies and Professor at the HSE School of International Regional Studies, welcomed the participants. He noted that ‘This year the Russian-Chinese Summer School on International Relations has entirely new goals, objectives, and participant composition.’ Initially, in 2011, the programme focused on getting to know each other better, but now the organisers are thinking globally and aim to create an academic community through the summer school.
Sergey Karaganov, Academic Supervisor of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE University, highlighted the importance of studying key aspects of the new world order due to the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape. ‘We are creating a new world now,’ he stated, elaborating on this topic in his lecture ‘Global Changes and the New International Order’ during the school's opening.
Anastasia Likhacheva, Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE University, emphasised the benefits of live communication and the opportunity to discuss complex issues together. ‘The last few years have shown that international relations are built through thousands and millions of personal interactions,’ she stressed, encouraging participants to ask challenging questions and engage actively in discussions.
Participants of the summer school receive:
Membership to the Russian-Chinese Summer School Alumni Association;
A certificate of completion;
Contributions to their portfolio for postgraduate applications (for master's students);
Networking opportunities with leading Chinese and Russian experts speaking at the summer school.
Da Wei, Director of the Centre for International Security and Strategy (CISS) and Professor at the School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University, also spoke at the opening of the XI Russian-Chinese Summer School. ‘We live in times of uncertainty,’ he said. ‘We cannot say for sure how the new world order will be structured and who will be involved.’
Another invited speaker, Wang Wen, Executive Dean of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies (RDCY) and Deputy Dean and Professor at the Silk Road School, Renmin University of China, thanked the organisers for their hospitality. He noted that this was not his first visit to Russia and HSE University. Professor Wang emphasised the importance of this year's summer school theme and expressed hope that trust between the countries will strengthen relations and create a multinational academic community.
The Russian-Chinese Summer School on International Relations is a project that has gathered over 300 participants from around the world over the years, fostering active international academic and cultural exchanges. Since 2011, the summer programme has been held annually, bringing together students from Russian and Chinese universities to discuss the most relevant international issues.
During the week-long programme, participants attend lectures, expert discussions, and round tables. At the end, they present group projects that are defended at HSE University.
