Math in Moscow
For the second year running Igor Artamkin, tenured professor, deputy head of the Faculty of Mathematics at HSE, has been named 'Best Teacher of the University'.
Right from the start when the faculty was set up in 2008, he with a team of likeminded people created conditions for study in the spirit of the unique principles of the Moscow school. This is an approach based on students solving problems independently and discussing their answers with their teachers in person. This is not a test but rather the central process of learning. This is how a taste for math is passed on from teacher to student, a sense of the depth and beauty of solutions and a large part of mathematical study. This kind of individual work of the teacher with his/her student is similar to traditional approaches in the creative arts.
Students get involved in academic work right from the start. They take part all the time in courses and seminars about the most recent mathematical discoveries with the people who made them. So students are getting information directly from the source and have the chance to ask questions and get answers from the most qualified specialists. The faculty also runs intensive mini-courses on various subjects.
Igor Artamkin has designed and combined teaching plans and course timetables to the best effect and has set out a system of registering the students’ achievements. Students and teachers spend their time at the faculty most efficiently. The deputy head is always aware of any problems his students are having and ready to help them.
Creating the English Master’s programme and integrating the faculty with 'Math in Moscow' which is run for foreign students is another of Igor Artamkin’s significant personal achievements.

Mathematician from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod Solves Equation Considered Unsolvable in Quadratures Since 19th Century
Mathematician Ivan Remizov from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences has made a conceptual breakthrough in the theory of differential equations. He has derived a universal formula for solving problems that had been considered unsolvable in quadratures for more than 190 years. This result fundamentally reshapes one of the oldest areas of mathematics and has potential to have important implications for fundamental physics and economics.
