HSE Students Became Winners of Interuniversity Olympiad in Arabic Language
Three HSE students of the educational programme in Asian and African Studies became winners of the 10th Interuniversity Olympiad in Arabic language.
This year the students from HSE, MGIMO, the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, Institute of Asian and African Studies of the Moscow State University, the Moscow State Linguistic University, the Diplomatic Academy of Russia, the Institute of Oriental Studies, the St. Petersburg State University and the Nizhny Novgorod State University took part in the event. The competition was held in four categories and included written and oral rounds.
Rustam Imaev, 4th-year student of the programme in Asian Studies, became the winner in the category ‘Art of public policy debates’. He also took the second place in the category ‘Linguistics’. In the debates category the participants had to write two short essays on the suggested issues. In the oral part the participants presented a suggested topic to the jury.
The written part of the ‘Regional Studies’ included a short essay about the traditions of the UAE and the test that implied the students to determine the flags of Arab countries and to write their official names in Arabic. In the oral part the participants were given cards with the images of well-known Arab political figures and monuments. It was necessary to identify them and add some historical or biographical information about them.
Sergey Elkind, 3rd-year HSE student, also got the prize for the debates in public policy. Kristina Smirnova, 4th-year student, took the third place in ‘Literature’ category.

Graduate of HSE University in St Petersburg Receives Award at ‘Chinese Bridge’ Competition in Beijing
In early September 2024, Anastasia Usyk, a graduate of the Bachelor’s Programme in Asian and African Studies at HSE University in St Petersburg, participated in the final round of the ‘Chinese Bridge’ International Language Competitionin Beijing, where she won the first prize in online voting and received the Audience Award and the Award for Most Outstanding Performance. Charming East: HSE University Hosts Anniversary Oriental Crazy Day 2024
At the end of May, HSE University hosted the traditional Oriental Crazy Day. This year the holiday was held for the tenth time. For students, this is an opportunity to show their talents on stage, take part in fortune-telling with the Book of Changes, and learn more about the diversity of Asian cultures as well as the bachelor’s programme ‘Asian and African Studies.’
Tea Ceremony, Naruto and Norigae: HSE Celebrates Year of the Green Wood Dragon
On the day of the second new moon after the winter solstice, the HSE Cultural Centre welcomed admirers of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese cultures. HSE students, teachers, and guests celebrated the Lunar New Year with South Korean hit songs and popular anime openings. They attended calligraphy and origami classes, tried regional sweets, and had Far Eastern teas. The festival ended with a big concert.
