HSE and China’s Top Universities to Launch Large-Scale Research and Education Projects

 

As part of the official visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the People’s Republic of China, the HSE delegation led by Rector Nikita Anisimov concluded new cooperation agreements with major Chinese universities. The agreements are designed to expand bilateral partnerships in education, science, and cultural exchange.

During the visit, the HSE University delegation met with the leadership of Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Beijing University of Technology, China’s top scientific and educational centres.

‘The strong overcome obstacles, and the wise overcome the entire journey. Cooperation with leading Chinese universities not only opens up new horizons in scientific research and knowledge exchange for Russian universities but also reinforces our position in the international educational space, serving as a key component of humanitarian cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. Together with our Chinese partners, today we took another important step towards mutual progress and prosperity.’

During the negotiations with our Chinese partners, two key agreements were signed. The first agreement with Tsinghua University focuses on the development of joint projects in the field of biology, ranging from molecular and computational neuroscience to AI-assisted big data analysis. This includes the formation of research groups, preparation of research publications, organization of internships for undergraduates and doctoral students, as well as holding of scientific and educational events. HSE doctoral students will have the opportunity to take internships at Tsinghua, while undergraduates will gain access to new academic mobility formats. The two universities also plan to launch dual degree programmes.

The academic exchange agreement signed with Peking University provides for an annual exchange of undergraduate and doctoral students. This document stipulates the procedures for selecting and assisting participants, their accommodation, administrative and visa support, and academic integration at the host institution. The agreement was published on the Kremlin website as one of the documents signed following the talks between the leaders of Russia and China.

In addition, during their visit, HSE representatives held separate meetings with Peking University units—in particular, with the School of Physics and the School of Management. They discussed the prospects for launching joint educational programmes, developing research initiatives, and participating in international grant competitions. The meetings were attended by HSE Vice Rector Victoria Panova, HSE MIEM Vice Rector and Director Dmitry Kovalenko, HSE MIEM Professor Andrey Vasenko, Dean of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science Ivan Arzhantsev, and Dean of the HSE Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs Anastasia Likhacheva.

The development of humanitarian cooperation and cultural exchange was among the key topics discussed at all the venues. The parties expressed interest in expanding programmes for learning Chinese in Russia and Russian in China, supporting youth initiatives and deepening academic dialogue between university communities.

HSE representatives also met with the university’s students and graduates studying or working in China. During their informal conversation, they shared experiences of participating in academic mobility programmes, talked about their professional plans, and discussed opportunities for future joint projects.

An international team including researchers from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science has presented KoWit-24, an annotated dataset of 2,700 Russian-language Kommersant news headlines containing wordplay. The dataset enables an assessment of how artificial intelligence detects and interprets wordplay. Experiments with five large language models show that even advanced systems still make mistakes, and that interpreting wordplay is more challenging for them than detecting it. The results were presented at the RANLP conference; the paper is available on Arxiv.org, and the dataset and the code for reproducing the experiments are available on GitHub.

BRICS International School Held in Delhi

The results of the BRICS International School: New Generation, which was held in Delhi, proved that young people have become key participants in the global dialogue. The event brought together 200 young leaders from leading universities and expert centres in India. The programme was organised by the BRICS Expert Council–Russia, based at HSE University, together with the Russian House in New Delhi with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

HSE Researchers Experimentally Demonstrate Positive Effects of Urban Parks on the Brain

Scientists at HSE University have investigated the effect of parks on the cognitive and emotional resources of city dwellers. The researchers compared brain electrical activity in 30 participants while they watched videos of walks through parks and along busy highways. The results showed that green urban environments with trees produce a consistent effect across individuals, helping the brain calm down and relax. By contrast, walks along busy streets were found to be distracting. The findings have been published in Scientific Reports.

Fourth Robotics Festival to Take Place at HSE University

From April 1 to 3, 2026, the HSE Pokrovka Campus will host the Fourth Robotics Festival—one of the key events organised by the Faculty of Computer Science for anyone interested in robotics, programming, and engineering creativity. The festival will bring together robotics competitions, discussions, educational formats, and demonstrations of technological developments.

‘The Identity of a Political Community Is Not Fixed—It Is Continuously Constructed and Contested’

Wang Yali has been interested in Russian language and politics since her time as an undergraduate at Peking University. After graduating with a degree in Asian and African Languages and Literatures and a second degree in International Relations, she pursued a Master’s in International Relations at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE University–Moscow. She is now pursuing a PhD at the Doctoral School of Political Science, examining Russian narratives of ‘East,’ ‘West,’ and its own place among them.

HSE to Launch Laboratories in Space Research and Nanoelectronics with One of India’s Top Universities

Scientists from the HSE University and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) will carry out joint research in the storage, transmission, and processing of data in space systems. A second major project will be a laboratory for superconducting spintronics—a promising field in modern nanoelectronics.

HSE Scientists Develop Method to Stabilise Iodine in Solar Cells

Scientists at HSE MIEM, in collaboration with colleagues from China, have developed a method to improve the durability of perovskite solar cells by addressing iodine loss from the material. The researchers introduced quaternary ammonium molecules into the perovskite structure; these molecules form strong electrostatic pairs with iodine ions, effectively anchoring them within the crystal lattice. As a result, the solar cells retain more than 92% of their power after a thousand hours of operation at 85°C. The study has been published in Advanced Energy Materials.

HSE Researchers Create Genome-Wide Map of Quadruplexes

An international team, including researchers from HSE University, has created the first comprehensive map of quadruplexes—unstable DNA structures involved in gene regulation. For the first time, scientists have shown that these structures function in pairs: one is located in a DNA region that initiates gene transcription, while the other lies in a nearby region that enhances this process. In healthy tissues, quadruplexes regulate tissue-specific genes, whereas in cancerous tissues they influence genes responsible for cell growth and division. These findings may contribute to the development of new anticancer drugs that target quadruplexes. The study has been published in Nucleic Acids Research.

HSE Scholars to Join Sino-Russian Association of Fundamental Sciences

The Sino-Russian Association of Fundamental Sciences has officially begun its work in China. It brings together research centres in mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, and Earth sciences, with participation from HSE University scholars. During the launch conference, the Sino-Russian Mathematics Series project was also presented; it envisages the publication of 100 textbooks and monographs over the next ten years. HSE University representatives Ivan Arzhantsev and Sergei Lando have joined the project’s editorial board.

International Winter School for Students from Two Leading Chinese Universities Held at HSE MIEM

Chinese students gained practical knowledge in the design, assembly, and operation of small spacecraft and systems, as well as in quantum mechanics, superconductivity, and materials science for solar energy.
