Negative traits in modern studies of personality structure

On October 16 Egorova M.S. (Doctor of Psychology, Professor, Head of the Department of Psychogenetics, Faculty of Psychology, Moscow State University) took part in the "Culture matters" research seminar with the report "Negative traits in modern studies of personality structure".

The report presented 3 areas of consideration of negative traits in modern studies of personality structure. The first of these is connected with the study of the most common (dispositional) personality traits and the revision of the five-factor personality model. The second direction of the study of "dark" personality characteristics in the context of the theory of traits arose in an interdisciplinary space - at the intersection of the interests of differential and clinical psychology. In the framework of this direction, ideas about the need for a dimensional approach for the correct diagnosis of personality disorders are developed. The third direction of the study of negative personality traits is associated with the analysis of complexes of negative traits, the most famous of which is the Dark Triad. It has been shown that three psychological traits that have been studied for a long time in psychology — non-clinical narcissism, non-clinical psychopathy, and macchiavellism — represent a peculiar syndrome of properties promising for the study of the negative (“dark”) side of personality.
