Nicolas Lagios joined the International College of Economics and Finance (ICEF) at HSE University–Moscow as an assistant professor in 2025. He holds a Master’s and a PhD in Economics and his research interests include political economy, cultural economics, and applied economics. In this interview, Nicolas talks about the qualities that make HSE students exceptional, the overlap between organisational psychology and his research, and why Moscow strikes the ideal work–life balance.

‘Policymakers Should Prioritise Investing in AI for Climate Adaptation’
Michael Appiah, from Ghana, is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the International Laboratory of Intangible-Driven Economy (IDLab) at HSE University–Perm. He recently spoke at the seminar ‘Artificial Intelligence, Digitalization, and Climate Vulnerability: Evidence from Heterogeneous Panel Models’ about his research on ‘the interplay between artificial intelligence, digitalisation, and climate vulnerability.’ Michael told the HSE News Service about the academic journey that led him to HSE University, his early impressions of Perm, and how AI can be utilised to combat climate change.

HSE University Welcomes New International Faculty Members
In early December, Vice Rector Alexey Koshel hosted his traditional welcome meeting with new international faculty members. In 2025, HSE University welcomes 44 successful candidates for tenure-track positions and postdoctoral fellowships.

‘We Describe Unwritten Languages’
Chiara Naccarato, Research Fellow at the HSE Linguistic Convergence Laboratory, graduated from university in Italy and came to Russia to study the languages of Dahgestan and the speech patterns of bilingual speakers. Inter Football Cup: Sport, Friendship, HSE!

‘I Hope I Will Be Able to Initiate New Research Projects at HSE University’
More than 10,000 scientific projects were supported by the Russian Science Foundation (RSF) in 2024. One of the grant recipients is Iranian scholar Dr Ahmad Ostovari Moghaddam, Assistant Professor at HSE MIEM. With the support of the RSF and HSE, he made the decision to remain in Russia long term.
