‘We Have a Lot of Opportunities for Cooperation Because We Have a Lot in Common’
On March 21, HSE University Rector Nikita Anisimov met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mexico to the Russian Federation Eduardo Villegas Mejias. The parties agreed to develop mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of education.
The meeting agenda focused on the expansion of joint work in various areas between HSE University and universities in Mexico.
While presenting HSE University to the ambassador, Nikita Anisimov highlighted the high level of education and research at the university, as demonstrated by its place in international rankings. For example, HSE is not only among the top 50 young universities in the world, but is also represented in 47 subject rankings. In 14 of these, HSE either takes first place among Russian universities or is the only one to appear. ‘We also take top places in Russian rankings—for example, first place in the Forbes Best Russian Universities Ranking,’ he added.
HSE University pays great attention to its international students. ‘A total of 5,500 foreigners from 139 countries study at our university. In addition, HSE is the only university in Russia that hires teachers on the international market. We have degree programmes taught fully in English, about 30 online programmes, as well as 45 international laboratories engaged in research in advanced scientific areas,’ said Nikita Anisimov. He noted that 17 students from Mexico are currently studying at HSE, and three citizens of the country are HSE staff members. ‘One of them works remotely and two are in Moscow. Ten students of our university are currently studying in Mexico under an exchange programme. We have a lot of opportunities for cooperation because we have a lot in common. I am sure we will find ways to cooperate,’ said the rector.
In turn, Eduardo Villegas Mejias highlighted the successful cooperation between HSE University and five Mexican universities in the framework of student exchange programmes. ‘There are topics on which we would like to achieve broader and deeper cooperation between HSE and Mexican universities. And we believe their number will increase. We could also consider signing an agreement with the Mexican Ministry of Education,’ said Eduardo Villegas Mejias. In addition, the ambassador said that HSE’s online programmes may be in great demand in Mexico. The parties also discussed possible options for cooperation in the field of science and the inclusion of HSE journals in Latin American databases.
The Embassy of Mexico and HSE University have agreed to maintain regular contact and take part in each other's projects. The ambassador will participate in the Yasin (April) Conference, meetings with students, and other events.
